Area Truck Care manager shares the importance of having a champion and being one for your people
Horrace L. originally began his professional career as a coach. He coached high school football, basketball and track.
“My passion is coaching, seeing the potential in someone else and working with them until they see the potential themselves,” Horrace said.
After deciding to make a career change, he found himself happily working as a general manager at another convenience store chain but was soon sought after by a Love’s recruiter to join the family of companies.
Horrace has always recognized the importance of taking advantage of opportunities.
“So many times, people subscribe to the belief that if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Sometimes you don’t need to wait for things to break to fix it,” he said.
Horrace began his career at Love’s as an assistant manager in 2016. He worked his way through the Road to Success program and after six months he transferred to a nearby location to receive tire shop training.A year later he transferred locations again, this time to be an operations manager and before long accepted a promotion to Truck Care manager.
As a former coach, Horrace understands the value of having someone guide you to bring out the best in you.
“I've had champions throughout Love’s who mean the world to me. I wouldn’t be in this position without them. They saw potential in me, provided me with the necessary training and made me comfortable to grow. It’s easy to say you see potential in someone but something entirely different when you lay out a path for them to actually succeed,” he said.
Realizing his own career accelerating, Horrace continued to focus on coaching and championing his teams. After a few months running the tire shop, Horrace was promoted to general manager for about a year, then returned to the world of Truck Care with another promotion to area Truck Care manager, the position he holds now.
For Horrace, it all comes down to people. Listening to people, understanding people and doing right by them.
“My approach to leadership is building a relationship with my team and making sure they understand no matter what I’ll always have their back. I’m not here for a paycheck, I’m here for them," he said.
Horrace is known to most of the people in his life as “a quiet guy” who really prefers to listen.
“In order to be a great champion of your people you have to listen well and understand what the other person is saying and where they are coming from,” he said.
